HCAA Track Athletes Bring Home Team and Indivdual Awards

Student-athletes from the Horizon Central Athletic Association had an outstanding showing at the 2009 SHSAA Provincial Track & Field Championships.

Fifteen HCAA athletes took home a total of twenty individual medals, including five gold medals, and the HCAA relay teams accumulated a further six medals.

Ryan Graf of Humboldt Collegiate was crowned Provincial Champion in both the Jr.Boys 100m and 200m events and captured silver in the 100m hurdles.  At 28 points, he was the top point getter for the HCAA district.  The other athletes attaining the title of Provincial Champion were Humboldt Collegiate’s Meghan Flavel and Gerad Dyck (Sr. Girls 400m and Sr. Boys high jump respectively) and Bruno’s Cody Thiel (Jr. Boys discus throw).

The HCAA district was awarded the Most Improved District plaque, having earned 325 points at this year’s championship compared to 202 last year.  Team depth was a great factor, as 42 athletes from 18 different schools scored points at the meet this year, and the HCAA relay teams earned 48 points this year compared to only 17 points last year (last year, none of the eight relay teams medaled, and this year six of the eight relay teams stood on the podium).  Thirteen of the athletes on the relay teams hadn’t earned points in their individual events, again demonstarting the team depth.

The 325 points was also the third best points total of the 14 districts in the province.  As per usual, Saskatoon finished first and Regina second.  “As a rural district, third place is our first place.  It’s pretty tough to beat Saskatoon and Regina,” said HCAA President and Muenster School head coach Marvin Renneberg.  “We couldn’t have been more pleased with how things went this year.”
